Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens offers the highest possible optical quality with no change in aperture over the full focal range of the lens. This allows photographers to set exposure at the widest aperture and zoom all the way through to 200mm without having to decrease shutter speed. Developed for use with a Canon SLR camera this autofocus telephoto zoom lens offers optimized use with the Canon EOS series digital cameras. Of particular note Canon has introduced an image stabilizer IS that adjusts to meet the demands of professional photography. IS reduces dramatically the image blur caused by camera shake. Gyro sensors detect unwanted vibrations triggering the corresponding movement of a correcting lens group perpendicular to the optical axis. This alters the light path returning the image to its correct position on the sensor or film plane. For shooting immobile subjects Mode 1 corrects for movement in the image along both the horizontal and vertical axes. For shooting while panning horizontally to follow a moving subject Mode 2 turns off vertical correction and prevents the effect of dragging the subject back through the frame. The lens Ring-type USM employs ultra-sonic frequency vibrations to drive auto focus with unrivalled speed and near-silent operation. A powerful CPU and improved AF algorithm contribute to speed performance. The EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM includes distance metering information providing compatibility with the E-TTL II flash system of late model cameras such as the EOS-1D Mark II EOS-1Ds Mark II EOS 5D and EOS 400D. When used in conjunction with Canons range of EX Speedlite flash units the lens passes distance information to the flash algorithm for markedly improved flash exposure metering. I went back and fourth for weeks between this and the f2.8 IS and finally settled on this one. Mainly because of the price though i have read this version is slightly sharperi have not tried the F2.8. Build quality is GREAT. IS is a bit noisy but not annoying. Images from this lens "pop". If youve been thinking about getting this lens as nike says JUST DO IT. you will NOT be dissapointed.

As a photographer this is a lens everyone should have in their bag of tools. This lens is amazing and the pictures are "tack sharp". A great product I would highly recommend.
Best telephoto zoom I own and it better be for this price
I own a Canon 75-300mm non-IS lens and while its light and sharp enough in bright light on a 1.6x crop body Ive missed too many shots of wildlife in the shade or at dawn/dusk. I was going on a trip to Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks and decided if there was ever a time to invest in a lens for the future it was now. When trying to decide whether to buy this lens or not I must have looked at every zoom lens in the 50-400mm range made by Canon Sigma Tamron and Tokina. I rented the Canon 100-400L for a weekend and learned a few things. 1 it was too large and heavy to carry around on hikes longer than a few miles and 2 good image stabilization was going to be just about as important as lens quality. With this new information and reading lots of lens tests I narrowed my choices down to this lens the Canon 70-300 IS and the Canon 55-250 IS. Now it really came down to money was I willing to spend nearly 2x as much on this lens which was sharper faster and weather sealed but weighed more and had less reach than the other two? Ultimately I decided to purchase this one because compared to the other two there was no way I would be disappointed with any of my photos due to the lens and the onus would be on me to take great photographs. With either of the others there was a chance Id wish the lens were faster or sharper. I am very happy with this purchase and have also become a believer in weather sealing. It was windy in Yellowstone and the pine trees were giving off huge amounts of pollen. I got several bits inside my Tamron 17-50 but the inside of this lens are flawless. The only reason I didnt give this lens 5 stars is the high price tag. In addition if you want to spend some more money to get some extra reach Id recommend the Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DG AF 1.4x Teleconverter for Canon EOS which works flawlessly with this lens and my 40D.
